I Will Lay Down and Sleep in Peace
2010-06-01

It's the first day of June, 2010. This year, just like previous years, is speeding by. Stephanie is finished with school on Thursday. But as far as any academic work goes, it was done last week. This week is pretty much a party, because, somehow, she has managed to be exempt from any finals.

I'll be continuing my job search this week, all the while still holding out hope for a call from the UTA Library. Today, I'll be delivering an application in person to the Richland Hills PD. Public Service Dispatcher. I will also request payment of my first unemployment check. First one EVER.

Psalm 64:7-10

7 But God shoots his arrow at them; they are wounded suddenly. 8 They are brought to ruin, with their own tongues turned against them; all who see them will wag their heads. 9 Then all mankind fears; they tell what God has brought about and ponder what he has done. 10 Let the righteous one rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him! Let all the upright in heart exult!

From A Musician Looks At the Psalms, by Don Wyrtzen:

"When I'm tempted to question certain inequities in my world, I need to be reminded that the administration of a just God promises perfect objectivity and lack of prejudice...someday. Such a God can be counted on to balance the scales.

"Ironically the very people who are bringing me the most grief, those who dare to wage war against God, will be brought down by their own words and schemes. God is in control!"

You'll notice as you read the Psalms that you will see words and concepts repeated quite a bit. God hammers home truth to us in this way, just as he has been hammering home the truth of the Church as Family to me in the past months.

In this Psalm, as in others, the truth is that God is the Sovereign Lord of our lives. There will come a day when he is feared and respected by all mankind. Remember Philippians 2:10-11. 10 ...so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. This is an event that will happen.

Psalm 3:5

I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me.

This is a beautiful verse in the Psalms. David is completely at rest in the protection and provision of God. "Care and grief do us good when they engage us to pray to God, as in earnest. David had always found God ready to answer his prayers." If the verse is read in context, David is crying out to God for protection from his foes. First, he cries out, then he lay down and slept! What great comfort the presence of God brings! "It is a great mercy, when we are in trouble, to have our minds stayed upon God. Behold the Son of David composing himself to his rest upon the cross, that bed of sorrows; commending his Spirit into the Father's hands in full confidence of a joyful resurrection. Behold this, O Christian: let faith teach you how to sleep, and how to die; while it assures you that as sleep is a short death, so death is only a longer sleep; the same God watches over you, in your bed and in your grave."
(Quotes from Matthew Henry Daily Readings)

Father, I thank you for the grace that allows me to sleep every night/day. Let all in your Church know the comfort of your grace, protection, and provision as it applies to the circumstances in their lives. Each member of your Family knows his/her own struggles, Father. We all have hurts. We all have temptations and trials. We all have "enemies," and we all have grief at one time or another in our lives. Let us all cry out to you, as David did, and then lay down to sleep in peace, to rise up to face another day. Your grace is sufficient, Father! It is enough!

Let us also be firmly convinced of your sovereignty in this world. There will always be apparent unfairness in the actions of men in this world. As long as human beings are in charge of the justice system, it will be corrupt. Of that we can be certain. However, Father, in your justice, there is no unfairness. We simply have to understand that it will take place in your time, not ours. We want to see justice NOW. But we cannot, because that is not how you choose to enact it. Therefore, we will be patient and wait. We will wait for your actions, we will wait for your timing. I will wait, Father, for your timing concerning my job. It will happen when you want it to, and not a minute sooner or later. I will take confidence in that, and just like David, I will sleep peacefully.

Father, I pray again for Christi's knee surgery this coming Friday. I pray for success and that it will enable her to walk without pain. I pray for Stephanie's last few days at school this week, and then for a good summer for her.

I pray for the Knight family as they adjust to Johanna moving away for a new job. I also pray for Randy as he continues to adjust to working again.

From the Presidential Prayer Team site:

PRAY FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA AND HIS ADMINISTRATION
President Barack Obama is ordering up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the Southwest border region, in a move
intended to quell growing public anger over illegal immigration and the new controversial law in Arizona.
Key lawmakers and intelligence officials are urging President Obama to increase the powers of the national
intelligence director in order to reduce the risk of increased intelligence failures.

Pray for President Obama and his advisors to be wise in matters of national security, foreign and domestic.

Sleep well tonight, knowing that your life and your circumstances are firmly in the grasp of almighty God!

Grace and peace, friends.
