Day 330--Riches of Glory
2009-02-13

Missed yesterday...I was (and still am) not well. Got a cold, I think. Don't think it's flu...no fever at all. Basic Sinu-bronchitis, I think. And Stephanie had an appointment with a new therapist, so her mother worked from home, took her to the doctor, and picked her up from school. I got to sleep until after 6pm.

The therapist is great! I think this one may actually bring us some relief. We have another ARD meeting with the school next Thursday. We are going to ask for some drastic changes, I think.

Here's today's prayer for President Obama, from the Praying Through the First 100 Days site.

For protection and safety for Malia and Sasha Obama every moment of every day
The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
Psalm 121:8(NIV)

Lord, I thank and praise You for the rich promises You make in Psalm 121 where You declare again and again through the psalmist Your promise to watch over us. What a joy and privilege it is, Heavenly Father, to realize You are concerned for us and guard us so precisely and attentively. Thank you, God, for Your never-ending love for Your children!

Comforted by Your watchful eye, we also intercede for President and Mrs. Obamas daughters, Malia and Sasha, asking You to see them and cradle them in Your sure and full protection. As they come and go from school, depart from and arrive again at their rooms in the White House wherever they are, Lord be with these children and keep them safe. May You be glorified as You honor our prayers, Lord, and we give You praise, amen.

Psalm for Today: Psalm 16:10-11;17:1

For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forever more.

Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry!
Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceipt!

"David's language is not to be limited to some particular kind of deliverance, but he entertains the undoubted assurance of eternal salvation, which freed him from all anxiety and fear.
"When God is reconciled to us, we have all things which are necessary to perfect hapiness. True and solid joy in which the minds of men may rest will never be found any where else but in God; and therefore, none but the faithful, who are contented with his grace alone, can be truly and perfectly happy."

Hebrews 2:6-10

Hebrews has always been a difficult book for me. We don't really know who wrote it. When I was a child, it was always assumed it was Paul, but the more "we" studied it, the more it appeared that it wasn't actually Paul who wrote it. The author of this letter is never identified.

It is a little more confusing than most of the letters in the New Testament.

In today's passage, the author begins by quoting a passage from the Psalms.

What is man and woman that you bother with them; why take a second look their way?
You made them not quite as high as the angels, bright with Eden's dawn light;
Then you put them in charge of your entire handcrafted world.

For some reason, Peterson (the translator of The Message) chooses to leave out the part that says, "or the son of man that you care for him."

The writer of Hebrews then proceeds to turn this passage around to refer to Jesus. I don't know if this was David's original intent when he penned Psalm 8, but God certainly can use it in any way he sees fit.

I love the way that Hebrews takes Jesus from being "not quite as high as the angels," (as he was born into human flesh) to being "crowned so much higher than any angel, with a glory 'bright with Eden's dawn light.'" And, ironically, the event that crowned Jesus in this way was his death. In that death, "he fully experienced death in every person's place."

Father, I am fascinated by the way you take something that would normally appear to us to be horrible, and, at best, mundane, and make it the crowning event in the glory of your Son. Jesus Christ was made lower than the angels, briefly, so that he could be crowned with glory and honor and "made perfect" (or complete) through his suffering. Only you, Father, could take something like suffering and use it to lead "all these people to glory." Let us never be afraid to suffer in the name of Jesus. Let us always glory in our savior, as you crowned him with glory and honor with the death that took our place.

I cannot begin to fathom the greatness of that event.

We live and breathe on an earth created by this magnificent God! Let us glory in that.

Carpe vita eternus, friends!
