GOD ENCOUNTERS
2008-11-28

'Tis the day after Thanksgiving...and we're still not through visiting parents. Sigh. Fortunately, we both have this day off, as well.

Here's the daily prayer for the President-elect and company. As always it can be found here.

For the President- and Vice President-Elects families to be protected by God moment by moment
But let all who take refuge in You be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread Your protection over them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You.
Psalm 5:11

Holy Lord God, You alone are deserving of our complete faith and trust. You can do anything and Your plans cannot be undermined by even the wisest or cleverest of persons. As You showed Your faithfulness to the psalmist, You show Your faithfulness to us day by day.

Now, God, we ask that You will do the same for the families of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. In their positions they are vulnerable to attack from forces both literal and spiritual. Protect them, Lord, and keep them under Your mighty wings, that they may witness Your power and know that it is You, and You alone God, who is ministering to them. We pray this, O Lord, in the name of Your Son Jesus, amen.

Psalm for today: Psalm 119:137-144

Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. Verse 142

How true this is! God's righteousness stands forever. Truth is truth forever, never changing.

Day 280 in The Message//Remix:Solo

It's review day once again, so I'll look back at the last six devotions to see if I learned anything.

DAY 274--YES!--2 Corinthians 1:17-22

God's promises are sure. They are stamped with the "YES!" of Jesus. No matter what happens in our lives, we need not worry, because of God's "Yes!" As always, we have to remind that this is not a blank check. It simply means that God will keep his promise. He will do what he says he will do.

Also, on this day, I read the article in Tabletalk Magazine about Jesus drinking the cup of God's wrath in our place. He drank it dry, which means that there no wrath left for us who believe in Christ. Romans 8 sums this up by saying, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1)

DAY 275--LIFTING THE VEIL--2 Corinthians 3:12-18

There is nothing between us and God. For all believers in Jesus, we have direct access to God. No more temple veil, no more veil on the face of Moses. No more human intermediaries (is that a word?). Through Jesus, we can come "face-to-face" with our Father.

DAY 276--OUR ORDINARY LIVES--2 Corinthians 4:5-13

No matter what happens in our lives, God knows what to do. The passage of Scripture in this devotion is beautiful. Paul really gives us an encouraging word here. Let us always remember that, even though we carry this treasure of Christ around in "jars of clay," God is always right there with us to help us, no matter what the circumstances. God hasn't left our side!

DAY 277--A FRESH START--2 Corinthians 5:14-21

This passage contains one of the more popular memory verses, 2 Corinthians 5:17, which says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." We all get a fresh start with Jesus. And we need to work on being better "friends" with God, who is already calling us "friend."

DAY 278--A WIDE-OPEN, SPACIOUS LIFE--2 Corinthians 6:1-13

This is the passage that changed my outlook at work. God reminded me once again what kind of attitude I need to maintain at my work place. And, honestly, this was the devotion that had the biggest impact on me. It seriously had an impact on the rest of my week at work.

We work as though we are working for God. Not for men.

DAY 279--DISTRESS THAT DRIVES US TO GOD--2 Corinthians 7:8-13

God allows (sometimes causes)distress to come our way. There is always a purpose for it, and that purpose is to drive us closer to him. If something happens to you that jars your life, let it drive you towards God, not away from him.

Well, there it is.

Father, I thank you for the things you showed me this past week. I pray that I will not quickly forget them, as I am prone to do sometimes. If I do, remind me quickly.

Grace and peace, friends.
