A Granite Safe House
2008-06-01

If you have a few minutes, start off by watching this video of Louie Giglio describing laminin. I think it will blow you away.

Psalm for today: Psalm 26

"Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men,
in whose hands are evil devices, and whose right hands are full of bribes.
But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;
redeem me, and be gracious to me.
My foot stands on level ground;
in the great assembly I will bless the LORD." Verses 9-12

If you will indulge me, I feel inclined to include in this entry an entire (one-page) column by the editor of the Tabletalk Magazine, the devotional magazine put out by Ligonier Ministries, ministry home of Dr. R.C. Sproul. The title of the column is "Don't Be So Open-minded."

Our enemy's supreme deception is in his attempt to convince us that he doesn't exist. Toward that end, he has launched his assault against us with every weapon in his carefully fashioned arsenal. Perhaps his greatest success is in persuading us that being open-minded is a good thing. For it is precisely when we accept the notion that open-mindedness is a Christian virtue that we fall into the same devilish trap by which our first parents were ensnared.

Once our minds are open to open-mindedness, all ideas, no matter how absurd, can come and go as they please--with our sanction. We thus become headless and brainless philosophers who just want to get along. One such philosopher and self-proclaimed theologian has written: "So I believe we have radically to rethink our understanding of the place of Christianity in the global religious picture. And we have to face the fact that its one path amongst others, and then reform our belief-system to be compatible with this. This is the big new challenge that theologians and church leaders have yet to face. We have to become consciously what are called relious pluralists." This is the mantra of religious pluralists: Liberate your mind, lose your faith, and feel the love.

Although many professed evangelicals have become precarious evanjellyfish, I would like to think that most have not yet succumbed to the most blatant sort of religious pluralism. Nevertheless, being the narrow-minded biblical fundamentalist that I am, I am decidedly closed-minded to anything that is not biblical, and I concur with John Calvin: "Wherefore all theology, when separated from Christ, is not only vain and confused, but is also mad, deceitful, and spurious; for, though the philosophers sometimes utter excellent sayings, yet they have nothing but what is short-lived, and even mixed up with wicked and erroneous sentiments." As the closed-minded, Christ-minded faithful we must join arms against the satanic pluralism of our day, whether it is decreed from the Vatican or broadcast from Mecca. We live and breathe for Christ alone and proclaim that there is only one way to God. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

I agree 100% with this column! And I love that word he made up..."evanjellyfish." Heh.

Day 172

Joel 3:14-19

There is very vivid imagery present in this passage, first of God as roaring from Zion, shouting from Jerusalem, and the Earth and sky quaking in terror. But then the rest is of God as a "safe hiding place, a granite safe house for the children of Israel." One of my favorite images of God in all the Bible is when he is described as a "strong tower" or any of the variations on that theme. In fact, we will be singing the Newsboys song "Strong Tower" at church this morning. But I love Peterson's translation of this passage..."a granite safe house." Granite is always thought of as being extremely strong.

Finally, we have depicted "wine streaming off the mountains, milk rivering out of the hills, water flowing everywhere..." In other words, everything you could ever need or want is available in the Lord's city. We will be provided for, liberally!

Father, as I read this passage today, I am both terrified and comforted at the same time. Terrified at the thought of your "roar." The roar that causes earth and sky to tremble in terror. But I am comforted by the very next verse that tells me of your safe hiding place, your "granite safe house." I long to be permanently dwelling in your safe house. You are a strong tower, a mighty fortress for us who believe. There will be rivers of milk and wine and water flowing for us, where there will be "barren badlands" for those who don't believe. Thank you for giving me the ability to believe. Always remind me of my own limitations in comparison to your infinite provisions. Let that be an inspiration to me daily to depend on you and not me. And let that also be an inspiration to others around me.

Which vision of God do you need the most today? His roar of justice, or his safe protection from harm? Rest in his presence today as you meditate on that.

Grace and peace, friends.
